my brain hurts

I've noticed a lot of Star Trek chatter in the last couple of days. You'd think I notice something more important, like, man I don't know, business trends? But no. For example: while leaving from work yesterday, two dudes passed by talking about whether they would prefer having a phaser or a sonic screwdriver (I was elated that for once it wasn't me talking about something crazily nerdy); One of my friends put a Facebook post celebrating the fact that she got the original ST series for 5 bucks, another referred to her haircut as "vulcan"; I ran into a webcomic about the Borg; I saw a Star Trek tshirt, but using the Star Wars font, was momentarily confused. It's weird.

I really like this future timeline this xkcd edition, comic, post? What is it? I am afraid that this post raises more question than it answers, much like my wedding night, but let's get back to the topic at hand. It's an interesting look at what people are using the internet for and what people think will happen in the future. It reminds me of timelines that are frequently found in science fiction novels, which I like to read because they give me just enough info to be fascinated by the spaces of time between noteworthy events that didn't happen. The xkcd chart is made more reminiscent of a sci-fi novel timeline because of the last point, "2101: War was beginning."

One of my favorite science fiction timelines is from The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Actually it's a pretty good hard science fiction novel about First Contact. Of course it's disastrous.

my god this is a nerdy post.
